The electronic monitoring trial was introduced in May 2021 as part of a package of reforms aimed at giving courts the additional tools they need to keep the community safe.
The department conducted an evaluation of the trial after 12-months, with former police commissioner Bob Atkinson providing independent peer review of the report. The evaluation provided limited findings due to the small number of young people who were issued with a device during this period.
The report highlighted that electronic monitoring alone is not a single solution and other supports for young people and families are necessary to manage bail compliance and reduce reoffending.
