Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child protection sector and service development

Delivering better outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children is one of the government's highest priorities, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community controlled agencies play a critical role in achieving this.

In response to Recommendation 11.7 in the Queensland Child Protection Commission of Inquiry's final report, we fund Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Protection Peak Limited (QATSICPP) to continue to provide peak body services to child protection organisations that support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families across Queensland.

Under the funding arrangement that commenced 1 July 2015, QATSICPP delivers a range of capacity and capability building projects within the non-government sector to:

• improve access for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families to culturally appropriate community controlled and mainstream services and care, including universal and secondary support services
• ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander agencies are better supported to deliver high quality services that align with our Human Services Quality Framework
• deliver better designed tertiary services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families.

QATSICPP has employed two Identified Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Practice Leaders to drive culturally responsive practice within the sector and build partnerships with departmental practitioners to improve the outcomes for Indigenous children and families in the child protection system.

As the peak body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child protection services, QATSICPP will also continue to participate in the co-design, co-production and evaluation of major departmental initiatives and reform projects that benefit Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families, such as the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Service Reform Project.
