The Working Together Changing the Story: Youth Justice Strategy 2019–23 (PDF, 1.2MB) or (DOCX, 104KB) provides a framework that is strengthening the prevention, early intervention and rehabilitation responses to youth crime in Queensland.

The strategy is evidence-based and forms the foundation for how government, business and communities will work together to change the story for children and young people and keep communities safe.

On 25 July 2019 we released the Youth Justice Strategy Action Plan 2019–2021. This plan sets out the practical actions we are taking to continue youth justice system reforms. By working together on these actions we can change the story for young people and make our communities safer.

Our reform program to prevent and respond to youth crime is underpinned by 4 key pillars:

  • Intervene early
Our priority: Children and young people in vulnerable families have their health, education, safety and wellbeing needs met.
  • Keep children out of court
Our priority: Children and young people with early or low-level offending are engaged in education and training, and are supported to address their behaviours.
  • Keep children out of custody
Our priority: Children and young people who have offended have a safe place to live and are supervised and supported to repair harms, address behaviours, and reconnect with families and communities as an alternative to incarceration.
  • Reduce re-offending
Our priority: Children and young people who are repeat offenders get responses, punishments and support that work to stop re-offending and enable successful reintegration with their families, culture and communities.
