Our department and our non-government partners are progressing a range of initiatives to build a new child and family support system where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families have access to culturally appropriate Indigenous-specific and mainstream services and care.
Through these initiatives:
The Empowering Families Innovation Fund aims to generate new ideas for initiatives, programs or ways of working that will help keep Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children safe, well and connected to family, kin, culture and country.
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Service Reform Project will find better ways of working with, and meeting the needs of, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families and communities, to help reduce the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people in the child protection system.
New Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Family Wellbeing services are being established across the state to make it easier for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families to access culturally responsive support to improve their social, emotional, physical and spiritual wellbeing, and build their capacity to safely care for and protect their children.
The Department of Child Safety, Youth and Women is establishing the Family Participation Program(FPP) to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families to participate in child protection decision making.
Our Indigenous career progression program supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander university students and departmental staff to attain the necessary qualifications to become a Child Safety Officer.
Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Protection Peak has been funded to provide peak body services to child protection organisations that support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families across Queensland, and undertake a range of capacity and capability building projects within the non-government sector.
