The Queensland Government recognises that the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and families would be better met by having qualified Indigenous staff working in child protection.
To achieve this goal, we have developed a career progression program for Indigenous university students and departmental staff to attain the necessary qualifications to become a Child Safety Officer.
We offer cadetships to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander university students in their final year of study in either a Bachelor of Human Services or Bachelor of Social Work.
The cadetships provide financial and academic support, field placements and assistance with applying for employment with the department following graduation.
More information about applying for a cadetship is available in the Careers section of our website.
We have implemented a scholarships program, in collaboration with various Queensland universities, to support our permanently employed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff to complete a human services or social work degree. Having more qualified Indigenous staff working in child protection will improve our delivery of culturally appropriate services and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families to live safe, healthy and strong lives.
