Protective orders include children subject to assessment orders (court assessment orders) made during an investigation and assessment and child protection orders for children subject to ongoing intervention.
A court assessment order is granted by the Childrens Court in circumstances when an investigation is necessary to assess whether a child is in need of protection and the investigation cannot be carried out unless an order is made, that is, the parents will not consent to the actions required.
A child protection order is made by the Childrens Court when the child is assessed as being in need of protection and the protection and care needs of the child are unlikely to be met by a less intrusive intervention.
This measure is provided for national reporting to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare in accordance with nationally agreed reporting definitions and is also used within Queensland as a measure of the total number of children subject to an order (whether it be an assessment order or child protection order) on a certain date.
The total number of children subject to protective orders was 11,567 as at 30 June 2020. This comprised 403 children subject to court assessment orders and 11,164 children subject to child protection orders.
The number of children subject to protective orders increased 10.1 per cent from the previous year (10,506 as at 30 June 2019). Since 30 June 2016 the number of children subject to protective orders increased by 20.8 per cent.
